SUMMARY:A Discussion of Atheism and Ethical Culture
DESCRIPTION:According to a Pew Research Center report from 2024\, roughly 28% of Americans are religiously unaffiliated\, classified as “nones”. Of these\, 83% profess to be agnostic or vaguely uncertain about religion\, with the remainder being atheists who claim god or gods do not exist. If\, however\, atheism is defined more broadly as an absence of theistic belief\, most “nones” may be considered to be atheists. In general many accuse atheists of being nihilists or lacking a foundation for moral and ethical standards. However\, it may be argued that because atheism does not adhere to the dictates of a predefined moral code\, it supports the development and evolution of an ethical culture based on critical thinking about human interactions and social justice.
