SUMMARY:What Is It Like to be a 911 Operator?
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what a 911 operator experiences in a typical work day?  Is it a constant stream of horrible situations such as the depictions you see on TV?  Or it is 90% boredom coupled with 10% horror?  We will hear from a 911 operator today.  She will share experiences\, and insights from her work.  Of course\, we won’t be sharing any names of callers; we respect their confidentiality. \nThis meeting is a Zoom “hybrid” meeting.  We will meet at our regular venue\, Extraordinary Ventures\, where the program will take place.  We will also Zoom the program.    If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please use our contact us form (https://ehstnc.org/contact-us/) to make your request.

SUMMARY:Flock Cameras: The Risks of Building a "Local" (but really national) Surveillance Network
DESCRIPTION:Automated license plate reader cameras are often presented as simple crime-fighting tools\, but systems like Flock create a searchable record of where ordinary people drive\, when they travel\, and who they may be visiting. This talk will explain how these camera networks work\, why they raise serious privacy and civil liberties concerns\, and why communities should think carefully before allowing this kind of surveillance infrastructure to take root. \nThis program will be presented via a Zoom session. You do not need a Zoom account to “attend” this virtual meeting.  If you would like to be a participant in the meeting\, please use our contact us form (https://ehstnc.org/contact-us/) to make your request.

SUMMARY:Some Ethical Considerations for the Use of AI in Warfare
DESCRIPTION:AI is rapidly becoming mandatory for modern militaries. Drone swarms\, autonomous weapons\, the use of AI for identifying military targets and directing weapons can be highly effective where human control fails. To what extent should AI be trusted with lethal force? What limitations should be placed on AI on the battlefield? What levels of human control could or should be included? As with “human judgement”\, where is the line between acceptable collateral damage and survival? We will have a presentation and discussion about the ethical considerations for the use of AI by the military.

SUMMARY:The State of Reproductive Rights in NC: How We Got Here\, and Where We Go From Here.
DESCRIPTION:Attacks on abortion access and reproductive freedom have long been rooted in patriarchal efforts to control other people’s bodies. Despite the fact that North Carolina has a history of being a more moderate state on abortion access (some abortion was legal in NC pre-Roe)\, the past 15 years have seen a dramatic restriction on access to abortion here\, led by right-wing political actors in our state. Misinformation\, gerrymandered legislative maps\, the politicization of healthcare\, and the weaponization of religion have all played a role. Join us and Pro-Choice North Carolina for an overview of the landscape of reproductive healthcare in NC\, and a discussion of how we got here and where we go in our effort to protect and expand reproductive freedom. \n\n\n  \n\n\nThis meeting is a Zoom “hybrid” meeting.  We will meet at our regular venue\, Extraordinary Ventures\, where the program will take place.  We will also Zoom the program.    Please sign up for our program via our Eventbrite page: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-state-of-reproductive-rights-in-nc-tickets-1988904148849?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Microplastics - What All of Us Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:At this point you probably know a lot about microplastics.  Yet\, there is conflicting information about microplastics in our food chain\, and even in our bodies.  Are they harmful\, or benign?   Assuming the former\, what can we do to protect ourselves from them?  Assuming the latter\, are we worried needlessly?  Our talk today will focus on these issues.

SUMMARY:Why A Free Press Still Matters
DESCRIPTION:The subtitle for this presentation is “Fact\, Reality and Democracy in a Pick Your Truth World”.  Bill Horner III will speak to us about this critical resource for our democracy\, and what we can do to preserve it. \nBill Horner III has spent most of his career in newspapering. His first byline in The Sanford Herald\, founded by his grandfather in 1930\, came when he was 13 years old. He spent more than 30 years at The Herald\, the last 18 as publisher. The newspaper was recognized with four first-place “General Excellence” awards during his last six years there. After a short retirement beginning in 2016\, Bill served for more than four years as publisher and editor of The Chatham News + Record\, which won more news reporting awards than any other weekly newspaper in N.C. during his tenure there.

SUMMARY:Microplastics and PFAs
DESCRIPTION:Atish Sen\, EHST member and professional chemist\, will share his analysis of the controversy over microplastics and PFAs.  Separating fact from fiction is requires careful reading\, and some skepticism.  Have you ever wondered why microplastic photos show them on a person’s finger?  Those are the large pieces\, but some are microscopic and those are much more dangerous!  Mr. Sen will enlighten us on both microplastics and PFAs. \nThis program will be presented via a Zoom session. SUMMARY:Social Action - Postcarding
DESCRIPTION:EHST will be postcarding to support voter turnout in the upcoming midterm elections.  The Center for Common Ground is providing us with the postcards and list of voters to contact.  The CCG “educates and empowers voters of color in voter suppression states” with the goal of “building a democracy that prioritizes the voices of all people.” \nWe will gather at 134 Circadian Way in Chapel Hill; the meeting room is on the lower level of the building.  There is one handicapped parking space near the entry\, and there are also two adjacent spaces\, mainly used for EV charging\, but also available for handicapped parking. Otherwise\, any space either graveled or paved and not designated “Arcadia Resident” is free to use.   Pens\, highlighters and postcards will be provided.  Participants can bring snacks to share if they like. Come and enjoy friendly camaraderie as well as the satisfaction of civic engagement. \nWe will not be Zooming this event.

SUMMARY:The Ethics of Listening to Others
DESCRIPTION:One of the problems our country is facing is the increasing polarization of society.  The Balkanization of our country pits opposing forces as sinister\, and evil.  The enemy is evil\, and intent on destroying our country.  Alarm bells are going off among liberals and conservatives\, Democrats and Republicans\,  the religious and the nonreligious.  Todd Bishop and Chris Kaman will explore paths leading to greater understanding and acceptance of others\, including listening. With these ideas\, we can lessen our judgement and condemnation\, replacing them with calm self assurance. We will also have practice listening sessions as a part of the program.

SUMMARY:Seaweed suggests solutions for microplastics removal and sustainable production of safe bioplastics
DESCRIPTION:Persistent microplastic particles (MPs) that accumulate in natural bodies of water vary widely in size and shape. Removing such diverse MPs from aquifers with conventional methods\, such as filtration and centrifugation\, is costly and inefficient. To address this challenge\, we designed a class of biomimetic cleaners inspired by natural systems\, including “Sargassum raft” meshes that trap MPs within their branched thalli and “Neptune balls” formed from seagrass. These meshes adhesively capture nano- and microscale particles while trapping millimeter-scale particles within their network. The microcleaners are fabricated from chitosan\, a sustainable biomaterial\, and could serve as scalable systems for efficiently removing diverse MPs from aquatic environments. \nThe ultimate sustainable solution to this problem requires replacing current synthetic polymers with bioplastics that biodegrade cleanly without producing microplastics. Prof. Orlin D. Velev of the NC State Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering will tell us about a multidisciplinary effort to develop new bioplastics from harvested invasive seaweed.

SUMMARY:The Boy in the Moon
DESCRIPTION:What is the essence of our humanity? The book\, “The Boy in the Moon: A Father’s Journey to Understand His Extraordinary Son\,” by Ian Brown\, is about raising his severely intellectually disabled son. The book explores life and meaning in the context of raising a severely disabled child. Brown\, an atheist\,  asks\, “What is the value of a life like his—a life lived in twilight\, and often in pain? What is the cost of his life to those around him?  Our speaker\, Brian Clougherty\, will provide us his thoughts on this book.
