SUMMARY:Labor Day Holiday
DESCRIPTION:We will NOT be meeting due to the Labor Day Weekend.  And don’t forget\, labor unions had to fight for this holiday.  It was not “given” to us by the kindness of corporations.  Read about the history of Labor Day at Wikipedia:\nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day

SUMMARY:Microplastics and PFAs
DESCRIPTION:Atish Sen\, EHST member and professional chemist\, will share his analysis of the controversy over microplastics and PFAs.  Separating fact from fiction is requires careful reading\, and some skepticism.  Have you ever wondered why microplastic photos show them on a person’s finger?  Those are the large pieces\, but some are microscopic and those are much more dangerous!  Mr. Sen will enlighten us on both microplastics and PFAs. \nThis program will be presented via a Zoom session. You do not need a Zoom account to “attend” this virtual meeting.  If you would like to be a participant in the meeting\, please use our contact us form (https://ehstnc.org/contact-us/) to make your request.

SUMMARY:How Citizens in Johnston County Stopped a Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:Francine Stephenson will speak to us and show us a documentary about how Johnston County stopped the Atlantic Coast Pipeline from coming through their community.  The Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League\, which Lois Gibbs created\, provided a grant to these citizens to help with the fight\, and that was crucial to their success. \n  \nThis meeting is a Zoom “hybrid” meeting.  We will meet at a different venue than our normal one.  We will meet the Carrboro Civic Center where the program will take place.  We will also Zoom the program.    If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please use our contact us form (https://ehstnc.org/contact-us/) to make your request.

SUMMARY:Social Action - Postcarding
DESCRIPTION:EHST will be postcarding to support voter turnout in the upcoming midterm elections.  The Center for Common Ground is providing us with the postcards and list of voters to contact.  The CCG “educates and empowers voters of color in voter suppression states” with the goal of “building a democracy that prioritizes the voices of all people.” \nWe will gather at 134 Circadian Way in Chapel Hill; the meeting room is on the lower level of the building.  There is one handicapped parking space near the entry\, and there are also two adjacent spaces\, mainly used for EV charging\, but also available for handicapped parking. Otherwise\, any space either graveled or paved and not designated “Arcadia Resident” is free to use.   Pens\, highlighters and postcards will be provided.  Participants can bring snacks to share if they like. Come and enjoy friendly camaraderie as well as the satisfaction of civic engagement. \nWe will not be Zooming this event.

SUMMARY:The Ethics of Listening to Others
DESCRIPTION:One of the problems our country is facing is the increasing polarization of society.  The Balkanization of our country pits opposing forces as sinister\, and evil.  The enemy is evil\, and intent on destroying our country.  Alarm bells are going off among liberals and conservatives\, Democrats and Republicans\,  the religious and the nonreligious.  Todd Bishop and Chris Kaman will explore paths leading to greater understanding and acceptance of others\, including listening. With these ideas\, we can lessen our judgement and condemnation\, replacing them with calm self assurance. We will also have practice listening sessions as a part of the program. \nThis meeting is a Zoom “hybrid” meeting.  We will meet at our regular venue\, Extraordinary Ventures\, where the program will take place.  We will also Zoom the program.    If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please use our contact us form (https://ehstnc.org/contact-us/) to make your request.

SUMMARY:Fall Members Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We will hold our annual fall members meeting on October 11th. We encourage all EHST members to attend. And we always welcome friends and visitors.  We have several important items on the agenda\, including a report on meeting attendance\, plans for next year including a change in venue\,  what members like or dislike about our weekly meetings\, and a call for candidates for officers for next year. We hope to see you all there!\n\n\nThis meeting is a Zoom only meeting.   If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please use our contact us form (https://ehstnc.org/contact-us/) to make your request.

SUMMARY:Seaweed suggests solutions for microplastics removal and sustainable production of safe bioplastics
DESCRIPTION:Persistent microplastic particles (MPs) that accumulate in natural bodies of water vary widely in size and shape. Removing such diverse MPs from aquifers with conventional methods\, such as filtration and centrifugation\, is costly and inefficient. To address this challenge\, we designed a class of biomimetic cleaners inspired by natural systems\, including “Sargassum raft” meshes that trap MPs within their branched thalli and “Neptune balls” formed from seagrass. These meshes adhesively capture nano- and microscale particles while trapping millimeter-scale particles within their network. The microcleaners are fabricated from chitosan\, a sustainable biomaterial\, and could serve as scalable systems for efficiently removing diverse MPs from aquatic environments. \nThe ultimate sustainable solution to this problem requires replacing current synthetic polymers with bioplastics that biodegrade cleanly without producing microplastics. Prof. Orlin D. Velev of the NC State Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering will tell us about a multidisciplinary effort to develop new bioplastics from harvested invasive seaweed.

SUMMARY:The Boy in the Moon
DESCRIPTION:What is the essence of our humanity? The book\, “The Boy in the Moon: A Father’s Journey to Understand His Extraordinary Son\,” by Ian Brown\, is about raising his severely intellectually disabled son. The book explores life and meaning in the context of raising a severely disabled child. Brown\, an atheist\,  asks\, “What is the value of a life like his—a life lived in twilight\, and often in pain? What is the cost of his life to those around him?  Our speaker\, Brian Clougherty\, will provide us his thoughts on this book.

DESCRIPTION:Susan Huckle will talk about the themes and experiences in her debut MOMoir about her Pentecostal-turned-flat-earther parents titled “The Earth Is Flat?! And Other Things My Mother Taught Me”. She will also discuss how her UNC-Chapel Hill journalism education influenced this book\, as well as why it wasn’t until moving to L.A. to be an actor that her beliefs meaningfully shifted. \n\nSusan Huckle is an actor and author in Los Angeles\, with TV credits that include Jane the Virgin\,The Mindy Project\, Nickelodeon shows\, and hostingL.A. This Week. The Earth Is Flat?! And Other Things My Mother Taught Me is about her evangelical-turned-flat-earther parents and quickly became a #1 New Release after its debut on Earth Day 2026. Susan grew up in Santa Maria\, CA\, and earned her B.A. in Journalism and Dramatic Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, as well as a Master of Sustainable Tourism from Arizona State University.\n\n\n\nThis program will be presented via a Zoom session.
