SUMMARY:The Ethics of Listening to Others
DESCRIPTION:One of the problems our country is facing is the increasing polarization of society.  The Balkanization of our country pits opposing forces as sinister\, and evil.  The enemy is evil\, and intent on destroying our country.  Alarm bells are going off among liberals and conservatives\, Democrats and Republicans\,  the religious and the nonreligious.  Todd Bishop and Chris Kaman will explore paths leading to greater understanding and acceptance of others\, including listening. With these ideas\, we can lessen our judgement and condemnation\, replacing them with calm self assurance. We will also have practice listening sessions as a part of the program. \nThis meeting is a Zoom “hybrid” meeting.  We will meet at our regular venue\, Extraordinary Ventures\, where the program will take place.  We will also Zoom the program.    If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please use our contact us form (https://ehstnc.org/contact-us/) to make your request.

SUMMARY:Seaweed suggests solutions for microplastics removal and sustainable production of safe bioplastics
DESCRIPTION:Persistent microplastic particles (MPs) that accumulate in natural bodies of water vary widely in size and shape. Removing such diverse MPs from aquifers with conventional methods\, such as filtration and centrifugation\, is costly and inefficient. To address this challenge\, we designed a class of biomimetic cleaners inspired by natural systems\, including “Sargassum raft” meshes that trap MPs within their branched thalli and “Neptune balls” formed from seagrass. These meshes adhesively capture nano- and microscale particles while trapping millimeter-scale particles within their network. The microcleaners are fabricated from chitosan\, a sustainable biomaterial\, and could serve as scalable systems for efficiently removing diverse MPs from aquatic environments. \nThe ultimate sustainable solution to this problem requires replacing current synthetic polymers with bioplastics that biodegrade cleanly without producing microplastics. We will discuss our current multidisciplinary effort with Prof. Chris Osburn of the NC State Blue Economy program to develop new bioplastics from harvested invasive seaweed.

SUMMARY:The Boy in the Moon
DESCRIPTION:What is the essence of our humanity? The book\, “The Boy in the Moon: A Father’s Journey to Understand His Extraordinary Son\,” by Ian Brown\, is about raising his severely intellectually disabled son. The book explores life and meaning in the context of raising a severely disabled child. Brown\, an atheist\,  asks\, “What is the value of a life like his—a life lived in twilight\, and often in pain? What is the cost of his life to those around him?  Our speaker\, Brian Clougherty\, will provide us his thoughts on this book.
