DESCRIPTION:Linda Patterson\, EHST member and author\, will speak about her new book “Am I Doing This Right.”  Linda Patterson’s book is a soul searching\, sincere\, and heartfelt story of a very painful time in her life\, when her husband\, John\, was diagnosed with terminal cancer\, died\, and then she faced a new phase of her life. Ms. Patterson is a very self aware person\, knowing her strengths and limitations. She has many stories to tell\, covering the full range from happy times to funny times to the times of grief and depression. She shares these with the reader with complete honesty\, and without sentimentalism. SUMMARY:Celebrating How We Got Here - The American Ethical Union
DESCRIPTION:In the era of the Third Great Awakening when the Free Religious Association was formed around such moral causes as the abolition of slavery and women’s suffrage\, a 27-year-old reformed Rabbi\, Felix Adler\, spoke out: “There is a great and crying evil in modern society… It is that narrowness of vision which shuts out the wider vistas of the soul… Where the roots of private virtue are diseased\, the fruit of public probity cannot but be corrupt.”  Almost 150 years after the founding Platform of Ethical Culture (1873)\, this program will feature members\, friends\, and guests  from Ethical Culture/Humanist societies across the country who will review the major accomplishments of the ethical movement and share personal reflections about “How We Got Here”.  This will be followed by breakout groups for additional reflections. The Platform will also highlight a number of musicians in the Ethical Culture movement.  \n  \nThis program will is presented by the American Ethical Union\, our national organization of which we are a chapter. SUMMARY:Developing the Community Toolkit: A Grassroots Approach to Meaningful Environmental Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:North Carolina communities have experienced years of limited opportunities to participate in state officials decision-making processes for environmental policy and permitting. This has been particularly difficult for historically marginalized and underserved communities under traditional power dynamics. DESCRIPTION:The American Ethical Union (AEU) was founded in 1893 when the first four ethical societies in the US (NYC\, Philadelphia\, Chicago and St. Louis) joined together to form an umbrella federated organization.  Fast forward 129 years and the AEU has expanded and contracted along with many other congregational organizations. \nWhat exactly does the AEU do\, and how has it changed over the years?  How does the EHST and its membership interact with the AEU\, and how has the pandemic impacted this relationship?  What are the current headwinds the AEU is facing and why were 2021 and 2022 particularly challenging years? \nJan Broughton (past president of the AEU) and Dorothy Dale (current AEU Board member) will discuss the AEU and attempt to answer members’ and friends’ questions. \nThis program will be presented via a Zoom session. SUMMARY:The Humanitarian Situation in Poland with Regard to Ukrainian Refugees
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Hanna Gracz will give a presentation focusing on the Ukrainian refugees in Poland. She will start with a little history of the area\, including maps showing the shared border between Poland and Ukraine\, and how that border has changed over time. Additionally\, she will discuss the logistics: How do the refugees arrive? Where do they go? How are they treated? Dr. Gracz is originally from Poland but has lived in the United States since 1984. Since she came to the US during a period of martial law in Poland\, she has a unique perspective on these issues. Dr. Gracz is a scientist by training and holds an MS in Physics with a Biophysics emphasis and a PhD in Chemistry with an emphasis in Biochemistry. SUMMARY:The Seven Daughters of Eve and Me
DESCRIPTION:The Seven Daughters of Eve is a 2001 semi-fictional book by Bryan Sykes that presents\, to a general audience\, the science of the origin of humans in Africa and how they spread around the world.  Sykes explains the principles of genetics and human evolution\, how mitochondrial DNA is inherited\, and how the analysis of ancient DNA links our prehistoric ancestors to modern humans.    \n\nIn 1991\, Otzi\, the prehistoric Iceman\, was found frozen in the Italian Alps.  Then\, Oxford geneticist Bryan Sykes made the astonishing discovery that Otzi’s DNA matched with a lady in Dorset\, England.  This started Bryan Sykes’ quest to unravel the genetic history of Europe\, and later\, of the world.  \n\nSpecifically\, you inherit your mitochondrial DNA exclusively from your mother\, and your mother inherited hers from her mother\, and so on.  This matrilineal DNA\, for Europeans\, is traced back to seven prehistoric mothers in various locations in Europe.  Who were they?  What were they like?   What does it mean for us?  This is all discussed in The Seven Daughters of Eve.  EHST Member Mike Conrad will present this program to us.\nThis meeting is a Zoom “hybrid” meeting.  We will meet at our regular venue\, Extraordinary Ventures\, where the program will take place.  We will also Zoom the program.    If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please email info@ncethicalsociety.org with your first and last name to be registered as an attendee for this program.

SUMMARY:W.E.B. Du Bois: Will the Truth Set You Free?
DESCRIPTION:Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois spoke to a group at the New York Society for Ethical Culture on February 7\, 1949.  This very timely address pertains especially to the need to face facts about enslavement and racism and to acknowledge the contributions of people of African descent – and it points out numerous places where that facing of fact has not occurred.  Dr. Du Bois’ words pertain especially to the resolution passed at the  AEU Assembly in 2017\, “Toward Repairing the Harm of Racism” which states: “Therefore\, we affirm efforts to study the lasting effects of the heritage of enslavement and racial discrimination especially on living African Americans\, but also on other people of color\, and on American society as a whole. We also affirm efforts to study ways that such lasting negative effects can be repaired\, and to be involved in actions to repair such effects.”\n  \nThis program will is presented by the American Ethical Union\, our national organization of which we are a chapter. DESCRIPTION:Jim Buie\, a resident of Fearrington and UNC Journalism School grad\, will lead us in a discussion of culture shocks. He spent nearly nine years living and teaching in the Middle East — first in Turkey for two years\, and then in Abu Dhabi\, United Arab Emirates. He returned in 2018 to Alamance County\, where he has been an adjunct at Elon University. We all have culture shocks. They can be funny\, scary\, and appalling moments when we misunderstand or when we are misunderstood by the culture of others. \nMr. Buie is an Elon University (NC) Instructor/Lecturer\, College of Communications. Previously\, Instructor of Communications at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi\, UAE.
