Each agricultural season\, we visit farmworkers in their homes to assess their needs\, engage in health education\, share information and resources\, and build community. \n  \nThis talk will be presented via a Zoom session. You do not need a Zoom account to “attend” this virtual meeting.  If you would like to be a participant in the meeting\, please email us at info@ncethicalsociety.org and provide your first and last name in your request.

SUMMARY:All American Ethical Union Presentation by the Youth of Ethical Societies
DESCRIPTION:EHST will have our program in conjunction with the all AEU program by the Youth of Ethical Societies (YES). Every year\, the teens of Ethical Societies around the country come together to discuss issues relevant to the world around them.  The weekend-long conference is entirely teen-led; they plan the theme\, they plan and lead the breakout discussion groups\, and they facilitate all activities during the conference. This is an impressive feat in any year — but to have pulled off a successful Youth of Ethical Societies (YES) Conference during a global pandemic is especially remarkable! \n  \nThis talk will be presented via a Zoom session. You do not need a Zoom account to “attend” this virtual meeting.  If you would like to be a participant in the meeting\, please email us at info@ncethicalsociety.org and provide your first and last name in your request.

SUMMARY:Conflict Reduction Strategies and Love/Friendship Styles
DESCRIPTION:Life coach Suzanne MacDonough will speak about conflict reduction strategies stemming from the 9 love/friendship styles.  The new trend is to speak of ‘conflict reduction’ or ‘conflict management’\, rather than ‘resolution’\, because many times\, in general\, conflict cannot be 100% eliminated.  The topic of conflict reduction is one that Ms. MacDonough has extensively studied\, as a ‘life coach’\, in her trainings through international corporate consulting companies. \n  \nThis talk will be presented via a Zoom session. SUMMARY:Partisanship\, Fascism and the Common Good: Defining Public Ethics After the January 6th Insurrection
DESCRIPTION:EHST will be participating in the all American Ethical Union program featuring Rep. Jamie Raskin. \nCongressman Jamie Raskin (MD-8) was Lead House Manager in the second Senate impeachment Trial of former President Donald Trump\, which ended with a 57-43 vote to convict and was the most bipartisan presidential impeachment process in U.S. history.  A professor of constitutional law\, bestselling author\, and former Whip of the Maryland State Senate\, Raskin has been on the frontlines of defending democracy against authoritarianism in our time and authored the successful House Resolution calling on Vice-President Pence to activate the provisions of the 25th Amendment after the failed coup of January 6th to prevent any further descent into chaos and violence at the hands of Donald Trump. \nRaskin introduced the Resolution adopted overwhelmingly by the House (386-3) in the first week of December in 2020 calling for release of all religious prisoners on earth and for repeal of all nations’ blasphemy\, apostasy and heresy laws\, which involve imaginary offenses and are notoriously used to oppress and persecute innocent people. \nRep. Raskin is co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus which he co-founded with Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA).  Raskin came to the attention of freethinkers nationally when he testified in the Maryland State Senate in 2006 against a proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage and answered a right-wing Senator who asserted that the Bible “defines marriage as one man and one woman” with this retort: “Senator\, with all due respect\, when you took your oath of office you put your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.” \n  \nThis talk will be presented via a Zoom session. You do not need a Zoom account to “attend” this virtual meeting.  If you would like to be a participant in the meeting\, please email us at info@ncethicalsociety.org and provide your first and last name in your request.

SUMMARY:Remembering and Honoring the Life of Eva Harrington
DESCRIPTION:EHST will hold a virtual memorial service for Eva Harrington who died in 2020. She was a longtime supporter of Ethical Culture both at EHST and in New York.  We welcome her friends and family to join us.  AEU Leader Randy Best will facilitate our program.  Here is a very brief review of her life: \nEva Harrington\, who passed away on March 15th\, 2020\, was a long-time member of the Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle.  Born in Vienna\, Austria on July 4th\, 1921\, she witnessed Hitler’s anschluss in March\, 1938\, followed by the incarceration of her father and uncle in the Dachau concentration camp.  After their release in 1939\, Eva and her parents emigrated first to England\, then to the United States\, arriving in 1940.   \nShe met her surviving husband\, Ralph Balzac\, at the Ethical Society of Northern Westchester in 1990.  They moved to North Carolina in 1994 and immediately joined EHST (then called the Ethical Culture Society of the Triangle). \nEva was an extremely bright and warm person\, deeply committed to her community and to her work as a guardian et litem.  She was very welcoming to visitors to EHST\, resulting in several new members joining the society.  Trained as an accountant she served many terms on the board as Treasurer\, swapping duties with Ralph as the allowed length of service ended.  She and Ralph opened their home for many EHST events over the years\, including an annual Thanksgiving potluck dinner for their EHST family. \nShe was predeceased by her daughter\, Susie Goldfrank\, a former AEU president and is survived by 3 grandchildren and 8 greatgrandchildren.  She is deeply missed by all those who knew her. \nThis talk will be presented via a Zoom session. You do not need a Zoom account to “attend” this virtual meeting.  If you would like to be a participant in the meeting\, please email us at info@ncethicalsociety.org and provide your first and last name in your request.

SUMMARY:Climate Change and Its Effects on Human Health
DESCRIPTION:NC State Prof. Jay Levine will speak to us about how climate change is negatively impacting human health.  Of course\, the disparities in wealth will cause the most harm to those on the lower rungs of the economic ladder.   The 1% of the population who is wealthy may have nothing to worry about\, but 99% of the rest of us in the US will.  So whose health will be impacted the most?  Prof. Levine will give us his perspective. \n  \nThis talk will be presented via a Zoom session. SUMMARY:I Have A Theory - Darwin Day Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Our society is currently plagued by many wacky theories. In the dictionary\, there are multiple definitions of the word theory\, most having not much to do with science. For scientists\, a theory is something special\, pure and rigorous\, right? Well\, maybe. Consider Gregor Mendel\, an Augustinian friar whose published research led us on a direct path to understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind the theory of evolution. For Darwin Day\, let’s consider how the theory of inheritance has evolved\, starting with Mendel. My theory and hope is that this will be instructional.  EHST member Fred Breidt will provide us with these reflections. \n  \nThis talk will be presented via a Zoom session. SUMMARY:Replacing Magical Thinking with Rational Discourse: How Can Freethinkers Help Restore Democracy
DESCRIPTION:This program will be shared by representatives from all twenty-five national Ethical Societies and will feature music from the Washington Ethical Society Chorus\, musicians Jaque DuPree and Barry Kornhauser\, with presiders Vandra Thorburn\, Elaine Durbach and Lyn Cox. \nAs we face this historical moment\, when cult thinking and fake news have fueled an attempted insurrection\, yet grassroots organizing gives us hope in the future of multiracial democracy\, we reflect on the intellectual traditions supporting a free society. What do our shared values lead us to do now in order to cultivate a world in which we bring out the best in each other and ideas are allowed to flourish without threat of violence? Our panel of thinkers from within our movement will draw from philosophy\, history\, and Ethical Culture tradition. We’ll be joined by Dr. David Sprintzen\, Professor Emeritus at Long Island University and Christian Hayden\, Leader-in-Training at the Ethical Society of St. Louis. Music from the Washington Ethical Society Chorus\, DuPree and Barry Kornhauser will round out the Platform. This program is part of our All-Societies Platform series\, in which Ethical Culture societies from around the country will join together on Zoom to learn and grow together. \n  \nThis talk will be presented via a Zoom session.
