SUMMARY:EHST CANCELS MARCH PROGRAMS
DESCRIPTION:Following the guidelines issued by Gov. Cooper\, EHST Sunday platforms are canceled through the end of March.  Therefore\, no meetings will be held on the 15th\,  the 22nd\, or  the 29th of March. \nPer the governor’s guidelines\, meetings should be restricted to fewer than 100 people.  Those in high risk categories should stay away from assemblies.  This applies to people age 65 and older\, those with heart or lung disease\, diabetes\, etc.  Also\, people with a weakened immune system.  This covers most of our Society.\n\nWe will make an announcement about April programs later in the month.

SUMMARY:Reckoning Initiative:  Race and Memory at UNC
DESCRIPTION:In the fall of 2019\, UNC – Chapel Hill embarked on a shared learning initiative entitled Reckoning: Race\, Memory and Reimagining the Public University.  Spurred in part by the ongoing controversy surrounding the forcible removal of the Confederate monument Silent Sam\, this initiative comprised a broad set of courses and campus events.  The objective was to support student learning and discussions about heritage\, race\, post-conflict legacies\, politics of remembrance\, and contemporary projects of reconciliation. \nEHST is pleased to host Professor William Sturkey of the UNC Department of History and Professor Charles Irons of the Department of History and Geography at Elon University to discuss the reckoning initiative at UNC and similar efforts at other institutions of higher learning. \nProf. Sturkey teaches one of the courses in this program at UNC.  He received his PhD in African American history at Ohio State University.  Prof. Irons is Chair of the Department of History and Geography at Elon University. \n  \nGENTLE REMINDER:  This will be the first Sunday of the month. DESCRIPTION:Ever since the formation of a BJP government in India\, since 2014 there has been a steady erosion of ethical behavior and secular democratic values in India.  Following their success in the 2019 elections\, the Modi-Shah government has adopted an avowed Hindu fundamentalist agenda.  Disfranchisement of minorities and revoking citizenship rights of Muslims and Christians is but the latest effort to turn India into a single party Hindu state.  EHST member Atish Sen will help us understand the situation in India.\n\nMr. Sen provided the slides to us\, and they can viewed here.

SUMMARY:Stone Soup Thanksgiving Celebration
DESCRIPTION:On November 24th\, EHST will hold its annual “Stone Soup” celebration.  We will tell the history of Stone Soup\, and then we will each be given an opportunity to express what we can be thankful for in our lives.   (Please note that being “thankful” does not require theism; nontheists can be thankful too!) \nWe will make our own soup using precooked ingredients.  Please do NOT bring raw ingredients; there is not enough time to cook them.  After heating the broth with the precooked or parboiled ingredients\, we will all sit down to enjoy our “stone soup” and fellowship. \nSince this is a public event\, alcoholic beverages are not permitted.  You may bring bread or rolls and/or juice to accompany the soup if you are unable to bring something to put into the soup.  Desserts are also welcome!

DESCRIPTION:Nicole Roman\, Guardian ad Litem District Administrator in North Carolina\, will speak to us about the program.  Its mission is to provide trained independent advocates to represent and promote the best interests of abused\, neglected\, and dependent children in the state court system\, and to work expediently toward a plan that ensures these children are placed in safe\, permanent homes.  The program exists in every county in North Carolina\, and serves more than 15\,000 children a year.

With their help\, Habitat homeowners achieve the strength\, stability\, and independence they need to build a better future for themselves and their families. \nThe national organization has begun a campaign to make housing affordable for all families.  “Habitat knows the complexities that surround the cost of home. We also know the struggle\, stress and pain of far too many families in our communities.  And we know that those with the fewest resources are forced to make the hardest choices.  We have to take a stand and declare our commitment:  No family should have to pay more than half of their paycheck to cover the cost of home.” \n“Over the next five years\, we commit to mobilizing our local Habitat organizations\, our partners\, our volunteers and community members across the country to find the solutions and help create the policies that will allow 10 million individuals to meet their most basic needs.”
