SUMMARY:The Humanitarian Situation in Poland with Regard to Ukrainian Refugees
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Hanna Gracz will give a presentation focusing on the Ukrainian refugees in Poland. Since she came to the US during a period of martial law in Poland\, she has a unique perspective on these issues. Dr. Gracz is a scientist by training and holds an MS in Physics with a Biophysics emphasis and a PhD in Chemistry with an emphasis in Biochemistry. After several years in the academic world\, including North Carolina State University\, she now runs a consulting firm\, NMR Service\, LLC. \nThis meeting is a Zoom “hybrid” meeting.  We will meet at our regular venue\, Extraordinary Ventures\, where the program will take place.  We will also Zoom the program.    If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please email info@ncethicalsociety.org with your first and last name to be registered as an attendee for this program.

SUMMARY:The American Ethical Union - What You Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:The American Ethical Union (AEU) was founded in 1893 when the first four ethical societies in the US (NYC\, Philadelphia\, Chicago and St. Louis) joined together to form an umbrella federated organization.  Fast forward 129 years and the AEU has expanded and contracted along with many other congregational organizations. \nWhat exactly does the AEU do\, and how has it changed over the years?  How does the EHST and its membership interact with the AEU\, and how has the pandemic impacted this relationship?  What are the current headwinds the AEU is facing and why were 2021 and 2022 particularly challenging years? \nJan Broughton (past president of the AEU) and Dorothy Dale (current AEU Board member) will discuss the AEU and attempt to answer members’ and friends’ questions. \nThis program will be presented via a Zoom session. You do not need a Zoom account to “attend” this virtual meeting.  If you would like to be a participant in the meeting\, please email us at info@ncethicalsociety.org and provide your first and last name in your request.

SUMMARY:The Future of the American Ethical Union
DESCRIPTION:James Croft\, the Leader of the St. Louis Ethical Society\, has sparked a discussion about the future of the AEU.  He is asking some “soul searching” questions about the “movement” and its future.  Chris Kaman\, longtime EHST member\, spoke with James recently about his concerns about the future of the AEU\, a discussion initiated by Mr. Croft who has interviewed many people in AEU member societies about his concerns.  Chris will review Mr. Croft’s concerns and ask EHST members for their reactions.  Mr. Croft will give an address on May 8th which will be our program for that day; his talk will address his concerns\, and what he thinks the future of the the AEU is.

SUMMARY:Developing the Community Toolkit: A Grassroots Approach to Meaningful Environmental Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:North Carolina communities have experienced years of limited opportunities to participate in state officials decision-making processes for environmental policy and permitting. This has been particularly difficult for historically marginalized and underserved communities under traditional power dynamics. It’s not to say that there are no opportunities to engage in state actions as a member of the public\, just that there are some significant limitations.\nTo promote all community voices\, Clean Water NC is developing a new edition of our “Community Toolkit.”  The toolkit will provide resources you can take to your communities and become an advocate for your neighborhood\, regardless of time\, funding\, or knowledge restrictions.  Rachel Velez and Christine Diaz of Clean Water for North Carolina will give this presentation.
