SUMMARY:Climate Change: Getting Away From Fossil Fuels
DESCRIPTION:EHST member\, Chris Kaman\, will present a Ted Talk “How Do We Get The World Off Fossil Fuels Quickly and Fairly” along with a discussion of the talk’s key points.  The inspiring Ted Talk features many experts from many countries\, both developed and developing\, to help us understand not only “quickly” but also “fairly.”   Climate change affects different regions of the world differently\, and solutions to it must reflect such differences in consumption and needs of different regions.    Solutions must involve governments\, the financial sectors\, and individuals to move us to a carbon free(er) world. \n  \nThis program will be presented via a Zoom session. You do not need a Zoom account to “attend” this virtual meeting.  If you would like to be a participant in the meeting\, please email us at info@ehstnc.org and provide your first and last name in your request.

SUMMARY:139 Days: Antakya’s Resilience And Recovery Efforts After The 2023 Earthquakes
DESCRIPTION:On February 6\, 2023\, Turkey and Syria were rocked by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Somewhere well over 55\,000 people lost their lives and more than twice as many were injured. Buildings collapsed all over Turkey\, and millions of people were displaced from their homes. Unfortunately\, with our 24-hour news cycle\, this humanitarian crisis has faded from the minds of many Americans. Omur Kayikci\, a postdoctoral associate in Duke University’s Department of Biology\, is from Turkey and will give us an update on the situation in Turkey today. \nOmur Kayikci was born and raised in Antakya\, Turkey. She left Antakya to study biology at Middle East Technical University. She earned her PhD in Biology at Duke University and held post-doc researcher positions at Princeton University\, and Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden before returning back to Antakya with her own family in 2017. Omur had only been in NC for a month when the earthquakes hit her hometown and surrounding cities. Her immediate family and friends remain in Antakya. \n\nThis meeting is a Zoom “hybrid” meeting.  We will meet at our regular venue\, Extraordinary Ventures\, where the program will take place.  We will also Zoom the program.    If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please email info@ehstnc.org with your first and last name to be registered as an attendee for this program.
