139 Days: Antakya’s Resilience And Recovery Efforts After The 2023 Earthquakes
June 25, 2023 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
On February 6, 2023, Turkey and Syria were rocked by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Somewhere well over 55,000 people lost their lives and more than twice as many were injured. Buildings collapsed all over Turkey, and millions of people were displaced from their homes. Unfortunately, with our 24-hour news cycle, this humanitarian crisis has faded from the minds of many Americans. Omur Kayikci, a postdoctoral associate in Duke University’s Department of Biology, is from Turkey and will give us an update on the situation in Turkey today.
Omur Kayikci was born and raised in Antakya, Turkey. She left Antakya to study biology at Middle East Technical University. She earned her PhD in Biology at Duke University and held post-doc researcher positions at Princeton University, and Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden before returning back to Antakya with her own family in 2017. Omur had only been in NC for a month when the earthquakes hit her hometown and surrounding cities. Her immediate family and friends remain in Antakya.
This meeting is a Zoom “hybrid” meeting. We will meet at our regular venue, Extraordinary Ventures, where the program will take place. We will also Zoom the program.
