Does Inmate Labor Equate to Slavery?

Labor Day often brings cheers to the “labor movement” for all of its accomplishments. These days there does not seem to be much to cheer about, and this issue is no exception. In fact, use of inmate labor as “slavery” and “indentured servitude” is permitted by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Or is it? Kudos to the NPR radio program, 1A, by Joshua Johnson, for raising this issue recently! We will play the first half of his show from Monday, August 27th, “Is Inmate Labor Modern-Day Slavery?” and we will then discuss the issue.
