Ethics in Protest Photography
June 6, 2021 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
The inauguration of Donald Trump was immediately followed by the largest protest in U.S. history. His four years in office included several protests–both by alt-right extremists and anti-racist activists–culminating in the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. Photojournalism can provide both an engaging qualitative story and useful quantitative data about what happens at these protests. However, the ethical questions of photojournalism are perhaps more relevant and difficult than ever under these circumstances. In this talk, astrophysics professor and protest photojournalist Anthony Crider will discuss both large and small protests in North Carolina, Virginia, and D.C he has covered during the past four years and ethical questions raised in both taking and publishing photos of these events. (Attendees may wish to visit http://acrider.photos/ beforehand to see samples of these protest photos.)
This talk will be presented via a Zoom session. You do not need a Zoom account to “attend” this virtual meeting. If you would like to be a participant in the meeting, please email us at info@ncethicalsociety.org and provide your first and last name in your request.
