Kids in Court
July 11, 2021 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Dorothy Hairston Mitchell, supervising attorney, Juvenile Law Clinic at NCCU, will talk about some of her youngest clients and the challenges they face in navigating the Juvenile Justice system. Children as young as 6 are expected to assist in his or her defense in juvenile court. Ms. Mitchell works to help these children, and is an advocate for raising the age at which a young person can be expected to participate in their defense.
Advocates for raising the age for juvenile proceedings include Gov. Roy Cooper’s Task Force on Racial Equity in Criminal Justice, which recommends the age be raised to 12. A subcommittee of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee, which was established by the state legislature, recommends 10. The National Juvenile Justice Network recommends 14. You need to know the status of these efforts to help reform the system.
This talk will be presented via a Zoom session. You do not need a Zoom account to “attend” this virtual meeting. If you would like to be a participant in the meeting, please email us at info@ncethicalsociety.org and provide your first and last name in your request.
