The Warning from Texas: Culture Wars, Media, and Democracy

Texas’ recent legislative session sent shock waves across the nation as they passed laws to limit women’s health care, remove restrictions on openly carrying handguns, and privilege a religious freedom that places public health and human rights at risk. As the culture wars in Texas grabbed national attention, the fundamentals of our American democracy were quietly being broken in the shadows.
Carolyn A. Parker, native Texan, Ethical Humanist, and Chair of the AEU Ethical Action Committee will talk about the culture wars in Texas, what they might signal for the rest of the country, and why we should care.
