Witnessing the Dissolution of Democracy

Randy Best, Leader of the Northern Virginia Ethical Society, will speak about our current state of democracy.   Here’s what his talk will cover in his own words.

“At home and abroad the institution of democracy is challenged, and sometimes usurped, by populist autocrats.  The pursuit of power has been elevated to the extent that democratic norms and institutions have become mere inconveniences to be overcome and discarded.  I am witness to procedural changes that will allow state legislatures to overrule and discard election results when their party’s candidate loses the vote.  I will take stock of recent events and what they foreshadow in a politics whose only goal is staying in power.”
