Our programs cover a wide range of topics. Every aspect of living involves ethical issues and choice and our society explores these dynamics and their complexity by alternating speakers who present their views with group gatherings where members and friends have the opportunity to contribute their opinions. Ethical topics by nature are open-ended and controversial, driven by social, political, economic, and cultural differences. There are ethical dilemmas in politics, science, medicine, religion – everywhere more than one human being interacts with another. There are no easy solutions to questions raised but our society offers a haven for people who seek to broaden their understanding and perspective of these issues and want to share with others who are committed to reaching for a more ethical life. We also have videos on ethical topics from Ted Talks. See our upcoming events.
Speakers
Our speakers (aka Platform Speakers) are selected based on their knowledge and expertise on a given subject, not necessarily on the degree to which they agree with the basic values and principles of Ethical Culture. We may invite speakers with dramatically opposing views in order to challenge the existing “politically correct” views. Some questions raised have been whether healthcare is a right or a privilege, does the military take ethics seriously, is the war in Iraq a just cause or immoral, and why is evolution misunderstood and what are the ramifications.
We encourage those who wish to be a program speaker or those who have a suggested speaker to contact us and we will be happy to consider your request.
Community Days
We hold community days as a way for our members, friends, and visitors to participate in small group discussions around topics that allow each to share their ideas, and experiences with others. There is a theme the discussion is organized around. The theme is usually announced on the community day to ensure that everyone is equally prepared (or unprepared) to address the topic. After the small groups meet, we convene as a larger group, and share core ideas or experiences while respecting everyone’s privacy.
